Fair Use Policy

How copyright law may apply to memes, parody, and other transformative content shared on MemeDome.

1. What Is Fair Use?

Fair Use is a legal doctrine under United States copyright law (and similar doctrines such as “Fair Dealing” in other jurisdictions) that allows limited use of copyrighted material without permission under certain circumstances.

Common examples may include:

  • Criticism and commentary
  • News reporting
  • Education and research
  • Parody and satire

2. Memes and Transformative Content

Many memes are considered transformative because they add new meaning, expression, or message to an existing work. For example, adding original humor, commentary, or social criticism to an image or video clip may qualify as transformative use.

However, whether a use qualifies as Fair Use depends on multiple legal factors and is determined on a case‑by‑case basis.

MemeDome’s Position

MemeDome supports creative expression and transformative content, but we do not make legal determinations about Fair Use. Responsibility for ensuring that content complies with copyright law remains with the user who uploads or shares it.

3. User Responsibilities

When posting or resharing content on MemeDome, you agree that:

  • Your content must add new meaning or expression.
  • You will not upload full, unaltered copyrighted works without permission.
  • You understand that claiming “Fair Use” does not guarantee protection from takedowns.
  • You will comply with valid copyright takedown requests.

4. DMCA & Content Removal

MemeDome complies with the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) and similar laws. Content may be removed in response to valid takedown notices, even if the uploader believes the content qualifies as Fair Use.

MemeDome reserves the right to remove or restrict content at its discretion to comply with legal obligations or platform policies.
